I met Lidia Naccarato, the charismatic leader of The Rosary Prayer Group during her hospitalization in the S. Luigi Gonzaga of Castiglione delle Stiviere (Mantua).

The stay in hospital

It was at a crucial moment of the affair that the observation occurred, little more than a year after that 24 May 1988, in which the thousand adherents of the Rosary Prayer Group had awaited the advent of the prophecy about the return of Christ, together with Uncle Antonio, resurrected.

In a series of dramatic events, what happened instead was the death of one of Naccaratoнs cousins, already consecrated, considered traitor and apostate.

During her stay in hospital, Lidia dressed humbly, in long clothes. Tidy and neat in her person, lucid, with a good orientation in space-time parameters and for people. In our talks, even if she replied to the point, she appeared very controlled. She never referred to have tried out hallucinatory phenomena during her stay in hospital.

From the moment she was admitted to the S. Luigi Gonzaga Hospital in August 1989, she appeared calm and maintained a correct behaviour, assuming, moreover, a certain detachment towards the other patients.

In the early days of her hospitalization, she established very close relationships with a young schizophrenic girl, not long admitted. This girl fell under Lidiaнs charm, to whom she behaved in a servile manner. Suddenly, she began to say she had to pray "to save the world". Just a brief span of time was enough for the affiliation of an adept (1).

Later, Lidia kept to the order of the department head not to condition the more suggestible of the prisoners.

Lidia affirmed to have accepted the restriction of prisoner in a spirit of submission to the divine will. She felt ready for any sacrifice that might be imposed upon her by the law of men. She received regular visits from relatives who came to see her two or three times a week.

Lidia Naccarato was 37 years old in 1989; unmarried, she came from Amantea, an agricultural centre in Calabria, where her family worked as tenant farmers.

Her father died in an accident when he was 42 years old. Her mother, now aged 76 years, two brothers and a sister apparently enjoyed good health. There had been no signs of psychiatric or family illness noted.

The patient had spent her childhood and adolescence in a cottage away from centres of habitation, in rather precarious economic conditions. She reported having lived in a patriarchal clan which had kept close bonds with the family nucleus of Uncle Antonio, who had emigrated abroad.

This person, known as "Uncle" also outside the family circle, was a figure endowed with charisma who was recognized as having thaumaturgical (wonder-working) powers. "He had the gift of helping others through prayer. He could resolve thus any problem, curing, even at a distance, peopleнs illnesses. He was a holy man who had dedicated his own life to his neighbours." Already for many years, before the events that we are going to examine, he had received visions of Jesus and the Madonna.

When Lidia was a child, she had to go some kilometres on foot to school. She had to repeat the fifth elementary year (age 11-12 years).

In describing the country life, she recalled never having known much recreation: the only party was that celebrating the patronal saint.

She was 10 years old when her father died, already then cardiopathic. Two years later she went with her family to Turin, for work, along with her uncle, who, in the meantime, had come back from South America.

As the patient explained: "We lived as if in the third world. We had no radio, we never travelled by train, we only heard them in the distance from our house."

The journey to Turin was an adventure: "We boarded the train and saw all the countryside from the window, and then all those lights in the city and all those cars and trams."

Lidia described well the sense of wonderment on seeing so many new things, together, however, with the dismay bound up with the confusion of the metropolis.

Being helped by a paternal aunt and, above all, by Uncle Antonio, who, in those years, was an йmigrй in France but often visited them, she reports that she became well introduced into the city and so were the other members of the family, too.

While working as shop-assitant in a grocerнs and a confectionerнs, she also continued her studies in the fifth class of the elementary school.

In 1972, when she was 20 years old, the event that determined her life - the revelatioin of her mission - happened. She was preparing to write to a cousin in America, when there on the blank sheet a self-drawn image appeared of a natural-sized leaf "of the nature of gold". At the centre of the leaf was written in block letters her name and at the left-hand side these prophetic words: "by finding this leaf you can save the Universe. Have eternal life and give eternal life."

In telling of the emotions experienced when confronted by this revelation, the patient explained that she felt already "as if prepared" for all this.

The news was publicized by her uncle, who commented that it was certainly a "divine sign." For seven months, relatives and friends searched anxiously for a leaf that might resemble the one drawn. Lidia even left her job.

A second vision revealed to her that the leaf would be found in a church of her village, near the altar of the Madonna. She had been appointed by God to "prepare the new advent of the Christ on earth and to combat Evil and Satan."

It was not long before the prayer group became very numerous. In one of the party reports it is told how the adepts numbered a thousand, gathered into groups in various villages in Calabria, at Pagani (Salerno) and at Turin (2).

Many people came to receive grace. The fame of the two, who performed prodigious recoveries, spread.

The visions

Lidia and her uncle had a number of visions, often when they were in one anotherнs company. At other times, the phenomenon was experienced only by one or the other. Lidia records the vision of Jesus, with a red garment, and the Madonna dressed in blue. She had difficulty describing the details better, such as, for example, the facial features.

She began receiving messages which she transcribed under dictation.

Lidia said in Hospital that the apparitions ceased after her arrest; though, in fact, we know of at least one message of May 1989 (which was at the start of a meeting, and therefore at the lifting of her house arrest).

The prayer group doctrine and organization

The Rosary Prayer Group was constituted in 1973 at Turin on the initiative of Antonio Naccarato. The central nucleus was given by the visions and the emergence of Lidia and Uncle Antonioнs mission.

In the theological vision of the "group" of 246 couples there was entrusted the task of preparing the ground to repair the effects of the original sin of the couple of progenitors, Adam and Eve. Lidia and Uncle Antonio were only the first of the 246 couples chosen by God. The patient did not know the others, but she knew (because it had been revealed to her) that they were operating throughout the world for the same end.

In 1975, Lidia, under dictation, wrote the "Story of Jesus", of which I transribe the incipit:

"I, Jesus Christ, connote the act of his birth guiding his writing on your pages, recounting my birth and my life when young as it was, and that I wish to bring to you two an example from my past, since my way on earth was sad, I Jesus Christ say, with my prayers, and with my strength, which was in me already from infancy, the life to come, and at the age of two years I began to know indifference and precision, fighting for truth and justice and as the days passed I learnt more of all things, hoping to be king of the earth, but not the God of men, I knew only that I had to arrive at a point of being a governor of men, commanding them with force and justice, at three years old I already knew that I had a Father in Heaven who ruled over us all, and who was called the God of men and of the earth, as others, too, knew ."

Also in 1975, there was published "The poem of the God Man", "visions and dictations" which had been given from Above between 1943 and 1961 to Maria Valtorta, a visionary of Viareggio, paralyzed for dozens of years. The text is a true favourite with the Rosary Prayer Group."

Valtorta had written:

"Jesus ordered me лGet an exercise book all mine. Copy on the first page the dictation of the day 16 August. In this book, you shall be spoken of.н I obeyed and I copied."

In 1983, on the death of Uncle, Lidia remained alone at the head of the Group. Uncle Antonio had offered his life to God to avoid spreading evil throughout the world.

Lidia has declared: "... in an extreme gesture of love for all, we made a resolution. In 1983, Uncle Antonio and I reciprocally offered our lives in sacrifice for the good of all. leaving it to God to determine the person who should die. On 7 June 1983 we knew that it had to be my Uncle to die and for 40 days until his death he knew much suffering."

It is not possible to reconstruct with certainty the period in which the formalization of a Group hierarchy took place.

Among what has been collected about Lidia, in awaiting the new event, a privileged role was enjoyed by the "apostles of life", the "hallowed", the "sisters" and lastly the adolescents (the "young virgins").

The adolescents "will make a crown" for Lidia when Christ and "Uncle" return.

Hallowed are those, after a personal call, consecrated to God, by dedicating themselves to the apostolate. The element that connotes the theological vision of the Group is given by the appointment of a new apostolic college (3).

The appointment of 12 "apostles of life" whose task was to spread abroad the word of God derives from an early message.

"Know, children, that in the great desire of my Heart, I establish the apostles of life. They, led by my devoted Salvatore Naccarato, will bring happiness to the Glory... . Rejoice, children, at the great task that awaits you since now you are paladins of the Fatherнs greatness and the glorious Apostles of My Son."

The apostles had been indicated to Lidia in the course of the various revelations and by means of her, therefore, came the recognition of their authority in the Group. Of the apostolic rank of others, Lidia became aware while they were speaking to her.

In all, they numbered 80 and led the Group.

Then there were designated 12 sisters: "Know, also, that the sisters of my heart will carry the song of the Hallelujah on the day of My Sonнs great return. But they, for love of me, shall pass the test of existence; only then will they be confirmed effective sisters by the Blessed One of the Great Love of the Solemn Perfection."

From the time of her arrest, Lidia Naccarato had no more contact with the hierarchy. In hospital, she said she did not even know if there were any faithful and if they continued their mission. She insisted that her state of in-patient had prevented her from leading the "Prayer Group."

On the other hand, after her arrest she had no more "visions": sometimes she lived the experience of feeling abandoned by God.

Also to be pointed out is the ambiguousness of her attitude towards the Catholic Church. Notwithstanding her prophesying the then imminent coming of Our Lord and the return of "Uncle" Antonio, Lidia maintained she had never left the Church. In order to strengthen the affirmation, some facts may be cited: the affiliates continued to be admitted to the sacraments even when by now she was preaching the advent and the apostolic hierarchy was formed.

The parish priest of St Peterнs in Amantea declared: "Until Antonio Naccaratoнs death, the group of St Peterнs attended my church as well as other nearby churches without leading to theological scission; after Antonio Naccaratoнs death, on the contrary, the groupнs attendance in my church became sporadic and then they all left. Lidia in particular never came again."

During her stay in the S. Luigi di Gonzaga Hospital, Lidia continued to pray a lot, reciting the Rosary and taking part in hearing Mass.

Lidia was reticent when asked about the meaning of the symbols adopted by the "Prayer Group," like, for instance, the circle containing nine crosses within it, which was painted with whitewash on almost all the doors of the house where the murder took place.

The "Prayer Groupнs" meetings provided for the reading of sacred texts, like the Bible and the above-mentioned "The Poem of the Man God" by Valtorta.

Lidia Naccarato tended, also, to play down the role of Uncle Antonio. As we have seen, she limited herself to saying that, he with her formed one of 246 couples.

Asked for a clarification of the wait for the coming of her uncle, Lidia said in fact he would come back like all the dead "as recited in the Creed." She does not say anything of the continual appearances of her uncle, which is clear from the literature of the "messages," nor does she speak of the special devotion of which he was the object.

Thus, for example, in the reports, the forces of order report having found in an on-the-spot investigation, at the centre of the courtyard where the adepts of the sect met, "a table on which there was the picture with a photograph of Uncle Antonio and the picture with the effigy of the Sacred Heart of Jesus."

"Holding one another by hands and forming a circle around the table, (the 30 adepts dressed in gowns with the rosary for necklace) accompanied the religious prayers invoking the return of the said "Uncle Antonio", founder of the лsectн."

After the killing of the"traitor" apostle, there was a concealment of every distinctive element (theological, soteriological, liturgical, symbolic); so it is not clear what role "Uncle" Antonio played in the Groupнs belief. If, to use Henri Desrocheнs categories, he had only an elective bond with God (that is, he were considered a prophet who spoke in the name of God) or he were not recognized, in the course of the parable, to have a native bond (as the cult of which he was the object would have believed).

The failure of the "Apocalypse" prohecy

In the days preceding the murder of the apostle, Lidia felt unquiet and knew that she was running grave dangers. Some appearances, had revealed to her that the satanists wanted to kidnap her or attempt her life.

She returned, together with a number of adepts, to her village of origin, S. Pietro in Amantea, but even there she felt threatened.

From early May, 1988, Uncle Antonio, in one of his apparitions, gave her recommendations for the preparation of the extraordinary event that was about to happen.

"There would be a sign, the Madonna would appear and then the Lord would return together with your resurrected Uncle."

In a message (with no indication of date) her Uncle invited Lidia to let down her hair and leave it free to the wind: he was impatient to return.

On 23 May 1988, the uncle asked Lidia to place his shoes near his bed. On day 8, everyone should dress in white clothes. A sign would be given that would convince even the unbelievers.

Lidiaнs loose hair caused a notable impression. Even the aqueduct workmen remained struck by her beauty and likened her to the Madonna.

This message was written in a prose, often with no respect for syntax, and contained numerous repetitions.

In the course of another apparition, her Uncle told Lidia that the adepts had to stop their mourning begun at his death and dress in ordinary clothes. On 8 June, however, they were to dress only in white clothes.

This signal was to make the inhabitants of the countryside around understand that something important was about to happen.

On another page, her Uncle gave precise instructions: When I return to my house, I want to find it as I left it. For the day 8 (June) you must again have a day of prayer, you will see what had been said. you will see a light in the sky at the established hour, 7 minutes past 5, thirty entire crosses and another thirty also but damaged, you will see the light of many colours and angels and saints singing in chorus and with the Mother who accompanies them ... ."

When Mary comes down to you I will come down and not only you will see me but the others, too ... light that is seen on every side so strong that it blinds every person who is not worthy to see it, those who deserve will see the light so each one is free and serene and will not again have to fear any ill... ."

Her Uncle was about to return to earth. A particular intensity of the solar light would herald his coming. To as many as were at prayer, their sins would be remitted. The message concluded with an affectionate greeting: "I will say no more because it is late but you, tomorrow, when you go downstairs, you must go there with your hair loose, I kiss you my sweet bride ... ."

The group of ten pages ends with the sentence: "I bless tomorrow she will go as a bride to the altar of Paradise towards Jesus and towards the Mother who gives you much now enough do not go on writing once you say alone the prayers to give you I shall tell you one thing more about Mary now enough I greet you and I give you a sweet kiss."

The adepts met in prayer, awaiting the sign and the miraculous happenings announced by the uncle.

"We did not know then that the waiting time would be three days," recalled Lidia. Three days of uninterrupted prayer, with nothing to eat or drink. Only Lidia went up into her room to receive the visions.

The prophecy did not materialize.

In a message some days previous, it had been revealed to Lidia that a person wanted to leave for Turin, but this must not be or else he would work evil.

Lidia realized that an apostle, cousin Peter, had entered into a pact with the Devil, and was possessed by Him.

Obeying her Uncle, she had the traitor locked in a room "where there was food for the domestic animals," and had him watched by an armed faithful.

"Now (the brother) could sleep peacefully because they had caught Judas and had caught him because it was actually he who was always doing things all alone for a few pence."

Her uncle ordered Lidia: "Go downstairs and tell them that Judas, who has betrayed you and that this one of the verdict, has not been like at that time when he betrayed Jesus Christ that now they have caught him and he is for always fixed and that also if he is not hanged still he is for always hanging and is as if he had been but do not put him to death since this place is not of death but of life which is reborn and not of life which dies so now you can go and you can tell it to all so they will understand that he is with Jesus Christ ... ."

In recounting the killing of the apostate adept, in a conversation a year after the deed, Lidia stressed how it all was so terrible and tragic. The killing of a human being still upset her. How far we are from that love that pervades all our preaching! But it is just this distance that can make us understand the true interpretative key to the killing."there was no choice: we had to suppress a creature now possessed by Satan" (4).

But let us return to the text of the messages (fol. 51): "You must pay attention only to Peter, who is already trying to get free ... he is doing everything to get out now he is free he cannot stay any longer like a hunted wild beast wants to flee but you must not be afraid for any reason about it for I think of you and also Salvatore who is ready to give his life for his own love now trying to get out of the barred window."

And again: "My dear children, as you were able to come since Judas is still bound as if hanged he must be dead and you must hurry to kill him all of you and Salvatore as well who if you do not I shall have to and I shall not be able to come very soon instead if you yourselves do it do not delay long, he is not a man but a devil and you must say so also to Salvatore who he himself will have to do it also with the pistol, but beware he will be able to escape and then there is nothing to be done all of you, kill Judas and you will kill evil, but the task is Salvatoreнs who must kill him with his hands as if he were actually a devil now go and get Salvatore who is under the stairs of ... because he has realized that there has not been the sign, and since he has seen nothing tell him to do what I have said after you will understand all even the bad which there is around you must uncover it ... call him aside and say to him Salvatore Uncle again gives you a mission but if you fail in this you will be a traitor therefore you go to Judas and you must kill him ... if you do not kill Judas evil is not conquered therefore call him soon and tell him this, to go alone he who must conquer every evil you remain in your room and check from the bathroom window ... " (fols. 73, 74).

After receiving this command from "Uncle" it seemed to her, Lidia ordered her brother and the other apostle to kill Satan.

"He was a monster and the bullets bounced off his body without even grazing him. I do not know how we were able to overcome him."

Lidiaнs words agree with the testimony by Santo Sicoli given to ithe examining magistrate: "He seemed to me a monstrous being and in any case with no more human semblance... ."

Then, always on the orders from "uncle", Lidia lay on the bed and thus was found later by the police.

Lidia was to tell the examining magistrate: "While everyone was intent on praying, I had the message that Pietro Latella was Satan and that to avoid his destroying everything it was necessary to immediately kill Satan in Pietro; otherwise I do not know what would have happened. And in fact, Pietro being a consecrated one, that Satan might be in him would have brought very serious consequences. There had been no reflection on the significance of the killing made to me and I immediately, I do not remember if through the window or the door, communicated to those outside that Pietro was Satan and that it was necessary to kill him and that the door had to be sealed in order to prevent the evil escaping. I considered that by killing the evil this would have been overcome and Pietro would have survived. And, indeed, when the judge showed me Pietro Latellaнs body, I did not think that he was dead, but, rather, that he was sleeping (fol. 60).

Events subsequent to the killing of the consecrated one

After the execution of the "traitor", the group exulted, incited by Lidia: shots were fired into the air. Accidental wounding happened in this phase, the carabiniers investigated and, probably, thus, came to discover what was going on.

Lidia Naccarato gave new heart to the disciples: at dawn the prophecy of Uncle Antonioнs return would come true. The door was sealed, as the message ordered: "Tell them to seal up the door, in that way it is safer until dawn. They do not know him yet, but the devil in person can free him so that, even if the door is sealed up, they must not leave off, not even for a moment, watch on the door, lest he escapes" (fol. 105).

During the nocturnal watch, some saw written in the sky "Viva Maria" (Long Live Mary).

When the police, investigating the wounding of an adept with a firearm, came to take him to Casualty at the Hospital of Cosenza, they reached the house on Moschicella farm, the scene of the incident, at 12 oнclock on 26 May, They found about thirty people, all dressed in white robes, holding hands, exhausted, circling round an altar with various images of saints and a photograph of Uncle Antonio.

After early passive resistance negating the facts by the group, with threats of malediction, they received confession of the "traitorнs" killing.

After the investigation, it was ascertained that the murder had actually been committed by two adepts, Lidia Naccaratoнs brother, Salvatore, and cousin, Santo Sicoli. The "traitor" was found lifeless, dressed, without shoes, tied to a chair with his hands behind his back. The murder was carried out with firearms and the victim must have been stripped at the time and, only afterwards, dressed again. He was found in a room with the door hermetically sealed by welding with oxy-hydrogen flame. Various cartridge cases about, various wounds on the body. In another room was Lidia, alone lying on the bed with a rosary crown in her hand, motionless, apparently in an altered state of consciousness.

Suddenly, she got up saying she was not mad when the ambulance was called.

According to the subsequent investigations, the victim lived in Turin, where the group was widespread, and had been called to the country by Lidia, where he was to have received the official investiture of "Apostle" with the distinguishing mark of a "yellow metal ring" to wear on his finger (according to the statement). He had gone to the country some weeks before the crime, during which he had gone twice into town to visit members of his family. When he was accused of betrayal, he had tried to return to Turin, but once there, he was sent back by the sectнs leader in Turin.

These facts, extracted from the investigations, confirm the hierarchical structure of the group which looked upon Uncle Antonio as messianic head in privileged and prophetic communion, in the etymological sense of "speaking in the place of", with his niece Lidia. Another leader ran the community of Turin and then there were eighty Apostles chosen by Lidia.

Doctrinal developments

Lidia Naccarato said, some months after the murder, that everything had happened in accordance with Danielнs prophecy ("And after sixty-two weeks, a Consecrated one will be killed, without there being in him any sin" 9, 26).

The same had been said by the theologian of the group, Felice Naccarato: "the episode well fits the prophecy of Daniel according to whom a consecrated one would be killed because he was possessed by the devil. That is the fruit of reflections subsequent to the event."

On 6 December, 1988, 47 adepts of Turin confessed their Creed in a letter to the examining magistrate: "... to us this faith we had, uncultured and without life, the Uncle and Lidia have reawakened, making us understand with much humility and love the "struggle" there is on earth between the good and the bad, because ... the Uncle and Lidia are different to other people, God has entrusted to them a great mission to give a last chance of salvation to this wicked and unjust humanity which gives way more and more to evil and takes no account that the judgment of the Supreme Judge is near... we have light on so many things because Lidia and the Uncle, guided by Jesus and Mary have instructed us with holy and just words which have all come true, providing us with messages to make us understand, and not only for us have these privileges been but for all who wanted them and want to participate because the struggle is universal and involves all the nations in which there is a couple who speak of God and of this mission ... . In every nation on earth what we are going ahead with is spoken of and everyone knows that the Saviours of the Universe are actually here in Italy and are for their great worth in the eyes of God Lidia and her Uncle."

In May 1989, Lidia Naccarato, while under house arrest (granted in February), received a new message. She called a meeting of the "Prayer Group" for the purpose of reorganization to face an imminent universal famine. In this way, the accused contravened the order prohibiting meetings among them. House arrest was consequently revoked and Lidia was again put away in the prison psychiatric hospital.

The non-fulfilment of the prophecy did not break up the "Rosary Prayer Group". The letter of the 47 adepts of Turin contained undoubted elements of re-affirmation (Melton, 1985). Lidia and her Uncle were the "Saviours of the Universe" and "they have informed us with words holy and just that everything has come true." Therefore, beyond the apparent failure of the prophecy, everything has come true.

Even the meeting called in May 1989, for the famine message, seems to suggest an interpretation of continuity in the prophetic system as well as in the relationship between leader the group. On the horizon, there is a universal famine and the group must reorganize for its own mission.

What was wrong was the "end-of-the-world" date and not the prophecy, according to Zygmuntнs hypothesis (1972). However, the Uncleнs return did not take place (but it was simply postponed) because evil had entered into the consecrated one, in order that the prophecy of Daniel (9, 26) be accomplished:

"And after sixty-two weeks life shall be taken away from an anointed, in whom there is no sin. The city and the sanctuary shall be destroyed by a prince who will come. Its end shall be in a cataclysm, and until the end, there shall be decreed war and destruction."

Lidiaнs prophecies were projected into the future.

(1) Also during her imprisonment, at Lidiaнs arrival, in an environment where there were already some adepts, a warder notes: "a radical change of humour and behaviour by the other prisoners belonging to the above-named sect... . With her arrival, the major consequences, it seems, were the effects on the younger women of the group; in fact, from that day, they no longer wore make-up and did not take any care for their person, they became much more serious in mood, they did not sing any more, and for every little thing they asked ... Lidiaнs ... opinion. In addition, I note they do not smoke in her presence and have taken to the habit of all congregating in a circle around her and speaking in a very low voice.

The Director, Sir... I wish to report to you that today ... (Lidia) was found in the bath of her cell together with another six prisoners, all apparently of the sect, but it was not possible to be sure what they were doing, and in addition she was venerated like a Madonna, in fact they kissed their hands with their mouths and with the same hand, touched the breast near the heart of the prisoner ... (Lidia). (From a report to the Director by an officer of the prison warders.)

(2) After all, "The Rosary Group" was already mentioned in a text "Le nuove religioni" (The new religions) by M. Introvigne, Milan, 1989, in the sphere of "disseminated propheticism."

(3) The appointment of new apostles was an element of similarity with other "restitutionist" movements, having in common the reconstitution of an apostolic college after a revelation. Of these, there are the Mormons (the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter-day Saints) with their Quorum of twelve Apostles, and the "Irvingite" churches (the "Catholic Apostolic Church" and the "Neo-Apostolic Church") with the constitution of a second apostolic college, once and for all, in the expectation of the Advent (with no succession of the Apostles foreseen).

(4) The patient insisted on the drama of the opposition between the faith (the term "revealed" of the apostleнs demonic nature) and the moral (the prohibition of killing).
