THE CLINICAL MANAGEMENT OF AGGRESSIVE PATIENT IN BEHAVIOURAL EMERGENCY: SOME DIFFERENCES AMONG ITALY, NORTH AMERICA AND FORMER SOVIET UNION
Abstract
Objective. The recent findings of the American Expert Consensus Panel for Behavioural Emergencies have given to the Authors the goal of the confrontation with an Italian panel of 55 psychiatrists and a Former Soviet Union (fSU) panel of 32 psychiatrists, mailed with an adapted version of the questionnaire. The aim of this study is a comparative analyse regarding method and lines coping aggressive patients between the Italian, fSU and North American (NA) clinical realities.
Methods. Seventy Italian and 49 fSU psychiatrists, working in Departments of Mental Health, interested in this ambit of research, have been invited to the research. As regard to the recent findings of the American Expert Consensus Panel for Behavioural Emergencies it has been possible to compare, among three panels, a selected sample of 15 items, only.
Results. It evidenced a similar clinical management of behavioural aggressive emergency. It emerges a tendency in clinical realities of countries of fSU to use low dosing level of atypical anti-psychotics, but not for conventional neuroleptics and diazepam in comparison with the other two groups.
Conclusion. The substantial overlapping opens up new prospects on more wide confrontation and advanced approach to the management of aggressiveness, with availability of techniques and adequate drugs, to reduce the stigma linked to violent behaviours of persons with mental disorders.
