Dissociative symptoms in patients with factitious disorders with Physical and Psychological Symptoms

Summary. This study investigated the overlapping area between factitious disorders, dissociative symptomatology and axys I comorbidity. Particularly we explored the frequency of factitious patients in a psychiatric inpatients population, distinguishing for psychological or physical symptoms and using a control subject group in order to compare the different expression of dissociative phenomena, as hypothesized. The research evidenced a statistical significancy for a current comorbidity with stimulant abuse and psychotic disorders. The current comorbidity for PTSD and anorexia tends toward to statistical significativity and similarly the lifetime comorbidity fro MDE, Bipolar I and PD. The analysis of dissociative phenomena permit to hypothesize a relevant role in the pathogenesis of factitious disorders. Further studies are necessary to confirm more consistently these results.
